Inspired by the life of Siphiwe, the Lace Basket from the Song of the Weaver collection tells a deeply personal story. After leaving school due to pregnancy, Siphiwe began weaving to support her family. Despite hardships, including her husband’s absence for four years and the loss of their cattle, she rebuilt her life with income from Gone Rural. The basket’s design elements—such as the bone representing her strength, the goat skull symbolizing the ritual upon her husband’s return, and the metal disc reflecting his bicycle visits—capture the layers of her journey through both fertile and challenging times.
